I was Chancellor for a day at Labour Conference

Hello from the Labour Party conference, where we are just ending three days of lobbying senior Labour politicians for wealth taxes as part of our Pay Up campaign.

Personally, I’m fighting for real wealth taxation because the need is so great. It is clear across Britain that people need more from the government. They have lost faith. They’re struggling with the cost of living, not being able to find housing, and finding a job. Not to mention the state of health and social care – I called today to check on my referral for an NHS waitlist and was told it could take 12 months just for an initial appointment.

We took action on Monday morning because we urgently need greater investment across the country for good green jobs, climate resilience, affordable and safe housing, the NHS and social care, and public infrastructure. My role was to cosplay as Rachel Reeves, which was excellent, as I’ve always wanted to be the Chancellor!

In her speech as head of the Treasury, Rachel Reeves said “decisions are still to be taken” about spending and taxation decisions. There is mounting pressure for real wealth taxation, and still time to influence her Autumn budget announcement. That’s why we need you to join us in October for our biggest, most visible action yet, right outside the Treasury on Monday the 27th!

Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer continually say they have to make “hard choices.” But why should those hard choices hurt the least well off, when 50 families in Britain own as much wealth as the bottom 50% of the population? We need Rachel Reeves to be willing to do the truly brave thing – stand up to the super-rich and introduce wealth taxes.

When we talked to senior Labour politicians this weekend about wealth taxes, they fobbed us off saying it was up to the Treasury, not them. This month we're taking the fight straight to Rachel Reeves. I’m excited for the feeling of gathering together with other youth across the country, refusing to be ignored. Join us!
